Government Support
The Indian government has implemented several initiatives to support young, local sports and athletes. One of the most prominent is the Khelo India Scheme, which aims to revive the sports culture at the grassroots level by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and establishing India as a prominent sporting nation. This scheme includes annual national-level sports competitions, talent identification, infrastructure development, and scholarships for young athletes. Another key initiative is the National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS), designed to identify sporting talent among students aged 8 to 12 years and provide them with training and support.

National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS)
The National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) is an initiative by the Indian government aimed at identifying and nurturing young sporting talent among students aged 8 to 12 years. Once identified, these young talents are provided with comprehensive support, including specialized training, access to quality coaching, and necessary sports equipment. The NSTSS also focuses on creating a structured pathway for these athletes to develop their skills and compete at higher levels, ensuring a steady supply of well-trained athletes who can represent India in various national and international competitions. Target Olympic Podium Scheme
To achieve India's Olympics Medal dream, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports established a flagship program to assist India's top athletes. The primary goal is to identify premier athletes who are potential medal winners in the upcoming Olympic Games. The scheme also keeps a close eye on future athletes. Once the premier athletes are identified, they fund them and also nurture them through the best possible training programs offered by elite coaches. TOPS-sponsored athletes have gained success in the past; P.V. Sindhu won a badminton Silver medal, whereas Sakshi Malik bagged a Bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The recently concluded Commonwealth Games comprised 47 athletes supported by
the TOPS scheme.

Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA)
The Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) is an initiative by the Indian government aimed at promoting sports and physical fitness among rural youth. This scheme focuses on developing sports infrastructure at the grassroots level by establishing basic sports facilities in villages and blocks across the country. PYKKA encourages community participation in sports by organizing local competitions and providing training and resources to young athletes in rural areas. By making sports accessible to rural youth, PYKKA aims to identify and nurture local talent, foster a culture of physical activity, and bridge the gap between urban and rural sports development. This initiative not only enhances the physical well-being of rural communities but also creates opportunities for young athletes to shine at higher levels of competition.
